Tongala Street Art Trail:
Goulburn Valley VIC

2022 Winner: Best Street Art Trail

Australia white png.png

Just like the little engine that could, Tongala – the ‘Little Mural Town’ – placed faith in herself to succeed. With more than 50 works, Tongala's street art evolved thanks to community passion and countless volunteer hours with a paintbrush in hand.

The result is a medley of murals that share stories of early settlers, and the joys and tribulations they experienced. Additional pieces shed light on Tongala in the modern era as industry, such as the Nestle factory, shaped the town.

The trail winds its way along the main street of Tongala, passing the quaint village shops that line one side of the road before curling around the street end and into the park opposite. This community-driven undertaking perfectly embodies what these Awards were established to achieve – to help towns, regions and precincts create a prosperous future that engenders pride through public art tourism.

Tongala, with its caravan park, is surrounded by other villages where creativity has blossomed. The Campaspe Art Trail will guide you to nearby mega murals and quirky surprises at numerous villages in close proximity.

Why not spend an extra night to explore Echuca? Australia's most famous historic river port is less than 18 minutes down the Murray Valley Highway from Tongala.

Where? In the centre of this small Goulburn Valley town.

Best viewing times: Any daylight hours that Tongala's shops, bakery and art studio are open!
